Rodolfo's Transportation Service [Jehovah's witnesses] can provide you with airport pick up service and meet you as you come out of Customs.  Trips from the airport to Samana average 4-1/2-5 hours depending upon the traffic and weather conditions.  If your flight is delayed, the brothers will wait for you for as long as it takes.

Airport Pickup
Santiago International Airport (STI) is the closest airport to Samana.  For arrival and departure  through  Puerto Plata International Airport (POP) or Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ), please kindly add $100 US to the total of your tour. For location of airports, see www.TropicalislandBB.com/Maps.htm

There is no airport pick up for flights arriving after 6:30 p.m. However, our chauffeur will always wait for flights scheduled earlier, that are delayed   For airport return, departing flights must be scheduled no earlier than eleven o'clock a.m. due to the travelling distance between Samana' and the airport.

If your flight is scheduled to arrive late at night, and you are coming through Santo Domingo International Airport, you can be picked up the next morning at either the Branch or at  a brother and sister's bed & breakfast: "Dinamic Dallas Bed & Breakfast", not far from the branch.

SAMANA EL PORTILLO AIRPORT (EPS)

Samana's El Portillo Airport is located between the two towns, Las Terrenas on the northern part of the Peninsula and Samana, on the southern side of the Peninsula, being approximately one hour from the town of Samana. There are reasonably priced scheduled direct flights into El Portillo Airport from Punta Cana International (PJU) and Santo Domingo International (SDQ). The flight takes approximately 40 minutes.

Airport pick up & return from these local airports is included in all  Economy, Semi, & All Inclusive packages. For more details, please visit:  www.tropicalislandbb.com/DirectFlights.htm

This is a new airport and to date only a small number of airlines are serving it. These include flights from  Toronto, Canada and different places in Europe, such as Condor and LTU International Airways ( www.itu.com/world & www.condor.com ) German airline, Condor, have scheduled El Catey, Samana (airport code AZS) for  flights from Frankfurt International Airport (FRA).  These airlines fly into El Catey twice a week, with departures from Frankfurt on Wednesday and Sunday and return flights on Monday and Thursday.

From the United States, American Eagle also has a direct flights between Samana' and Puerto Rico and flights run daily.  American Airlines also has an inexpensive flight direct to Samana' International from Puerto Rico (see:  American Airlines Net SAAver: www.aa.com)

This is excellent for travellers coming into the Dominican Republic through New York or Miami or other places that fly into Puerto Rico as they can be routed through Puerto Rico directly into Samana' to El Catey International.   It is expected that even more airlines will be flying into Samana' or El Catey International  in the not so distance future.

SANTIAGO  INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (STI)
(Best airport to fly in to if unable to fly into Samana' Airport (AZS & EPS))

This is the best international airport to fly into for airport pick up and return (if not flying into nearer Samana airports).  Scenic ride through the interior part of the country.

This is the least preferable airport to arrive through, if you would like airport pick up & return,  as it involves driving through the city of Santo Domingo, and the trip is much longer due to rough roads and detours.  However, airport pickup and return can be arranged regardless, but at an additional charge of $100 round trip. Taking a direct flight to Samana El Portillo Airport from Santo Domingo Airport takes only 40 minutes and is only slightly more than paying the extra for airport pick up from Santo Domingo

For details, please visit:
www.tropicalislandbb.com/DirectFlights.htm

This airport is located in the far east of the country near the eastern coast of the mainland and is quite far from Samana', Jarabacoa, Puerto Plata, and other locations. Since it takes between 10 and 12 hours to go from this airport to Samana', making the cost prohibitive, as well as the traveling time unreasonable, we do not offer airport pick up and return service from this airport.   If you are able to obtain a  very low fare flying into Punta Cana, then it would be well worth it to take the shuttle or  direct flight  to Samana from Punta Cana Airport.

PUERTO PLATA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (POP)
Charter shuttle flights available, twice a week,  to Samana airports
See:  www.tropicalislandbb.com/DirectFlights.htm

For those requesting  airport pick up from  Puerto Plata airport,  it is a  3-1/2 to 4-hour very scenic ride along the northeastern coast of the country, traveling most of the way along the sea to Samana.  (Airport pick up from Puerto Plata airport is an additional $100 US on to total of Economy, Semi, & All Inclusive packages. Some brothers prefer to charter a plane into one of the Samana airports. Taking a direct flight to Samana El Portillo Airport or Samana El Catey Airport  takes only 40 minutes and is only slightly more than paying the extra for airport pick up from Puerto Plata.  However, daily shuttle flights to Samana are available from Santo Domingo International (SDQ)

There are no  airport pick ups for flights scheduled later than 6:30 p.m. by Tropical Island Bed & Breakfast staff .

However, if flights that are scheduled earlier than 6:30 p.m. are delayed, our chauffeur will wait for as long as it takes the flight to arrive.  There is no additional charge for this.  However, tipping is in order as often the brother must change his schedule for the day or evening when there are delays.

Visiting the Branch - Tour of Bethel:  (see: http://www.tropicalislandbb.com/BethelTour.htm )

Often brothers may obtain permission to spend the night at Bethel. The Branch requires that a letter of recommendation from the service committee be faxed to them in advance. The Branches Fax number is (809) 595-3888.   Their telephone number is (809) 595-4007.  Brothers who spend the night at Bethel, rather than being picked up at the airport in Santo Domingo, may be picked up by Rodolfo the next morning at 10 o'clock.

TROPICAL MOUNTAIN BED & BREAKFAST - Located in the little mountain town of Jarabacoa:

This is a beautiful place in the mountains to spend 2-3 days, before coming to Samana to enjoy horseback riding, camping, mountain climbing, hiking, canyoning, river rafting, swimming at waterfalls, rivers, and pools.  Jarabacoa means "land of many waters."  The weather is cool, sunny, and spring like year round.

For  an 8-Day / 7-night Combo Adventure visiting both the Mountains of Jarabacoa & the Peninsula of Samana, please visit: www.tropicalislandbb.com/8DayS_ComboAdventure.htm

CHANGING MONEY

At both airports there are banks or counters to which you may go in order to change your dollars into pesos.  The average conversion rate is between $30 and $35 pesos to the US Dollar.  It is good to change a reasonable amount to cover taxis, buses, meals, and emergencies on the way to Samana.

To obtain the best exchange rates, foreign currencies should first be turned into US dollars and then into Pesos. Money can be changed for Dominican Pesos at many change booths located throughout the world in international airports but they give a poor exchange rate.  These should only be used as a last resort should you need to convert your Dominican Pesos into another currency after you have already left the Dominican Republic.  There are change booths that will buy or sell Dominican Pesos in Newark and Miami airports.  Remember, foreign coin money not even the US dollar, is not accepted at any cash exchange.  The cambio at the Santa Domingo and Puerta Plata airports actually pays a good rate of exchange for US dollars.  An alternative to using the ATM machines is to go into the bank itself and withdraw money on your debit or credit card.  This lowers the risk of your losing your card in an ATM machine.

RATE OF EXCHANGE (Average)

$100 U.S. = $3500 Dominican Pesos

$1.00 U.S. = $35 Dominican Pesos

Try to obtain SMALL bills of $20s, 50s, and 100s if you can because most places do not have change.
