A LITTLE ABOUT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

The Dominican Republic shares the Island of Hispañola with Haiti.  It covers two-thirds of the island, making the Dominican Republic the second largest country in the Caribbean, Cuba being the largest.

The Dominican Republic is one of the world's most geographically diverse nations for its size; climatic zones range from desert-like plains to lush tropical valleys to cool pine forests found on high mountain peaks, such as in Jarabacoa.

The little town of Jarabacoa, where the Tropical Mountain Bed & Breakfast is located, is a direct 2½ - 3 hour ride from Santo Domingo.  It is situated on a mountain range located in the province of La Vega.  This is an excellent place to come for horseback riding, camping, mountain climbing, hiking river rafting, and seeing the country's most beautiful waterfalls.

JARABACOA

Although Jarabacoa is in the mountains, it is seated amongst and surrounded by even higher mountains and hills, some reaching into the clouds.  Traveling up these mountains, one has a breathtaking view of the little village below, and sky to sky hills, valleys, rivers, pine trees, and gardens.

In the "campos" or the country, one sees the "campesinos" or poor country people working in the fields harvesting yucca, rice, and "tayota."  Some gather roses, orchids and other flowers that grow in Jarabacoa's extensive gardens.  At noontime, everyone goes home for the two-hour "siesta" to rest from the morning's activities, and eat with the family.  Some return to quaint thatch roofed houses made of palm wood, others to mansions surrounded by exotic gardens.

In the old Indian language "Jarabacoa" means "Land of Many Waters."  Rushing rivers and beautiful cascades characterize Jarabacoa, and visitors enjoy a variety of sports such as swimming, rafting and canyoning.  The rivers are often speckled with women washing the family's clothing and smacking them dry against the rocks.

There are two famous sayings about Jarabacoa.  One speaks of its "eterna primavera" or eternal spring.  This explains the other one, "God lives in all parts, but He sleeps in Jarabacoa."  Jarabacoa's year-round spring-like weather is pleasantly warm in the day and can range from cool to quite chilly at night, promising a good night's sleep.  This attracts visitors not only from abroad, but from towns across the Dominican Republic.

This rare species of parrot, the Amazona Ventralis, can be seen in the mountains of Jarabacoa.  In the homes where it is found as a pet, it is named "Cooka."  It is an endangered species, and found only in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, where it is even rarer as birds are eaten by the poverty-stricken people there.  In the Dominican Republic, it is caught and sold to foreigners (although this is against the law) for the amount of money it would take many very poor Dominicans to earn in two or three months ($200 U.S.).

MOUNTAIN CLIMBING

Visitors enjoy the ecological wonders of the uninhabited Bermuedez National Park on this challenging two or three-day climbing and camping trip through demanding terrain.  This not-to-be-missed excursion is an incredible experience for those interested in seeing what tourists will never see of the Dominican Republic.  Mules are used to assist in carrying provisions, and guides are provided to prepare meals as the trekkers make their way to the peak of the tallest mountains in the Caribbean, Pico Duarte.  A brother oversees all of the arrangements and guides and accompanies the hikers through the whole experience.  All inclusive, food, tents, sleeping bags, transportation, etc.

CANYONING

The adventurer gets not only to see some of Jarabacoa's falls, but to personally experience some "free falling" and scaling of the cliffs from which they cascade.  Two and a half hours and includes a native buffet lunch.

SWIMMING IN THE DOMINICAN ALPS

An entire day relaxing, swimming, & sun-tanning at the beautiful Dominican Alps pool, high in the Dominican Alps surrounded by beautiful pines. Food/drinks available.

DOMINICAN ALPS CYCLING

One of the Dominican Republic’s challenging bike trips is cycling the Dominican Alps.  You begin cycling at sea level, and then go into the mountains to heights of 5500 feet, and then cycle down to sea level again making for some long downhill sections where the coasting is great. The cycling trip can span some  295 km (185 miles) for enthusiastic cyclists!

The unique and panoramic landscape that the Dominican Republic has to offer will dazzle you, as you look over a precipice to the sea 5500 feet below you. The cycling will make you glad you came, and the beautiful scenery will make you never want to leave.

AIRPORT PICKUP SERVICE

Airport pick up and return through Santiago International Airport (STI)  is included in all Economy & Semi-Inclusive vacation plans.  See links on home page.

The Santiago International Airport (STI) is a very nicely organized, safe airport to fly into.    It is much better and less congested, plus safer than the Santo Domingo airport (SDQ).  It is the airport nearest to both bed and breakfasts:  Tropical Island and Tropical Mountain Bed & Breakfasts.   However, airport pick up and return can be arranged for from Puerto Plata (POP) and Santo Domingo (SDQ) International Airports as well for an additional charge of $50 US each way, since both of these airports are much further away.
