LAS TERRANAS
(Northern part of Peninsula of Samana):
§ Spanish Congregation: There is at last a congregation in the formerly isolated territory of the Congregation of Sanchez in Las Terrenas. It was formed this past year. Brothers from the Branch have come to look at proposed land for building a Kingdom Hall. The new congregation now has approximately 30 publishers, 65 in attendance at meetings, 11 regular pioneers, 2 special pioneers, 2 elders. Needgreaters have come from the States, Canada, Spain & Switzerland to help out.
§ Haitian Creole Group: Las Terrenas also has an official flourishing Haitian Creole Group & Circuit Overseer recently made recommendation to the branch for it to become a congregation. The Creole Group has approximately: 22 publishers with 60 in
attendance at the meetings, 2 special pioneers, 7 regular pioneers, & 3 elders. The Creole group now hold all the meetings in Creole. Needgreaters have come from the States, Canada, France & Switzerland to help out.
SAMANA CONGREGATION
(Southern part of Peninsula of Samana):
§ Samana now has over 100 publishers approximately: 20 regular pioneers, 2 special pioneers, with an elder body of 4 from Haiti, Sweden, U.S.& Dominican Republic. Attendance at meetings ranges from 130 to 150 and higher! Needgreaters have come from Spain, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Canada, U.S. to help out.
§ Kingdom Hall: Congregation still awaiting finalization of land purchase & then it is hoped that after Sanchez (next town from Samana) Congregations Kingdom Hall is built that the RBC can begin Kingdom Hall construction in Las Terrenas and in Samana.
§ Haitian Field: Thousands of Haitians have migrated to Samana and the last Sunday of each month, Samana congregation, assisted by the Creole Group in Las Terrenas, has a Watchtower Study & public talk in Creole.
§ Sign Language Field: A number of the young people in Samana Congregation are learning sign language having been encouraged & assisted by visiting needgreaters & they are translating for JANI who is now a zealous publisher & hoping to get baptized in the near future. [Jani has been attending meetings for 18 years & taught Sign Language by needgreaters coming to serve over the years]. The elders here in Samana are organizing territory for the deaf & the Sign Language Congregation in San Francisco Macoris (two hours from Samana are planning to come to Samana for a day to preach to the deaf that can be located in Samanas territory.
§ The Field Ministry: Samana Congregation zealously spends two full days a week in campo territory, Wednesdays to the extreme east part of the territory, & Fridays preaching in the extreme Western part of the territory. Many of the congregation stay out the full day preaching & conducting Bible studies in those areas, which include: Arroyo Barril & Las Galeras, Rincon, Los Tocones.
Zealous needgreaters continue to come to Samana to help out, many of which have arranged to moved here permanently, such as Susanna from Germany, Kim and Chuck from U.S, Elisa from Canada, Maria from Spain, Claudio & Marcella from Italy & Jemima from Spain. Others go back & forth to their country to work like - Jemima & Sarah from Germany, Linda from Denmark.
Eliseo Dishmey: For those of you who remember Eliseo when he was younger: Eliseo went into the full time service nine years ago, pioneering & on construction, attended Ministerial Training School, appointed an elder with the Samana Congregation and now, only last month was married to Jemima, one of Samana needgreater sisters.

Jemima came from Spain a number of years ago to help out, eventually becoming a part of the needgreater group that who helped establish the first congregation in Las Terrenas [northern part of Peninsula of Samana].
Sarah Steward: For those of you who remember little Sarah - ten year old needgreater, who came with her parents, Wayne & Joanie, to serve in the Dominican Republic - first in Samana for a number of years & then, later in Santiago, on Construction working with the Regional Building Committee, on the new Assembly Hall. Sarah became a pioneer, worked on construction (when she was older & met the age requirement) & eventually she and her family moved to serve where the need is great in Mexico!
Sarah was married May 1st, two months ago, to Micah
Lahren whom she met in Mexico. (where the Stewards
have been serving in English for the past 2 1/2 years)

Micah was serving in Puerto Vallarta as an Ministerial Servant and has 8 years full-time service. He is 26 & Sarah is now 20!
They are now serving in Texas.
FUTURE ENGLISH NEEDGREATER ASSEMBLIES:
One-Day Assembly: November 15, 2009 -
Assembly Hall at the Branch, Santo Domingo
Two-Day Assembly: April 10, 11, 2009 -
Assembly Hall, Villa Gonzalez, Santiago
[For those coming to the Dominican Republic to attend these assemblies, it would be good to check with the Branch before buying tickets to make sure that there are no changes in dates since these dates were given out by the Branch so far in advance].
For almost 20 years: although, there were no English speaking congregations in the Dominican Republic, the Branch has been very lovingly providing an English assembly twice a year for the missionaries & those serving where the need is great here. However, now, this past year, the first Engish congregation was formed in Santo Domingo, that will now also be benefiting from the two English assemblies.)

COMMENTS FROM TROPICAL ISLAND
BED & BREAKFAST GUESTS:
Hello Marilyn!
How are you?... I certainly miss the Dominican needgreater life we
enjoyed while we were there. Samana will always have a very special
place in my heart.

Mornings, the joys of preaching! Afternoons, swimming, eating fish on the beach!
The Samana brotherly association has been a great source of encouragement, which I am sharing with my local congregation.
I hope I am making the friends in my congregation jealous
enough to make them want to experience the need greater life
and maybe become permanent needgreaters.
It has been such a great upbuilding experience, that I feel bad for those
that have not experienced the joys that we had while in Samana.
With much love,
Eleanor Kim - Long Island Korean Congregation New York
Estella Kang - Natick Korean Congregation Massachusetts
Maria Lee - Bayside Korean Congregation New York

New Malecon: The little town of Samana located on the Peninsula of Samana was revamped a few years ago and a seawall built along the entire length of the Malecon (main street bordering the sea) where an attractive promenade was created with trees, flowers, water fountains & benches. Also adding to its beauty, towers with winding staircases were built for picture taking..
Cruise Ships from around the world then began to come into Samana two to three times a week. These dock off Barcardi Island as you can
see below:

Flea Market: Days that the cruise ships are in Samana, there is a colourful tropical island flea market or Feria with many brothers & sisters with their own stalls and tables selling paintings, jewelry, & unique island souveniers. This is how many local pioneers and needgreeaters are able to support their pioneering in the country.

Local pioneers & needgreaters from Germany & USA
Pueblo Principe: A few years after the Malecon was revamped,
investers from Spain created Pueblo Principe, a unique shopping mall, having the appearance of being a complex of quaint colourful little
wooden houses, [though constructed entirely of cement].

BREAKING NEWS June 2009 Samana
Samana will be integrated into the 24-hour electrical » system. The
Electricity Company of the North (Edenorte), informed today that the work aiming at integrating Samana into the system of 24 hours of electricity

This year a beautiful new 106 kilometer highway beginning in Santo Domingo & ending in Samana was opened!

The 170 kilometer highway cuts through the country south to north &
now makes travelling to Samana only two hours instead of the previous
5 ½ hour / 211kilometer trip. The highway begins just a few kilometers
from Las Americans Airport (SDQ).
DEVELOPMENT OF SAMANA
THE MONTE CARLO OF THE CARRIBEAN!:
On May 11 Presdent Leonel Fernandez, president of the country visited Samana. He spoke very seriously with a large crowd of the local people near the town park regarding immediate steps being taken to develop the town of Samana.
He called Samana the future Monte Carlo of Latin America, explaining that 450 million US dollars have been invested in developing Samana.
[Monte Carlo lies in the French Rivera on the Mediterranean Sea
in the corner of France & Italy & is widely known for its glamour,
luxurious yachts & sightings of royalty & the rich and famous.]
· Part of this development is a new acqueduct for a potable water pipeline ($165 million USD)
· Steps have been taken for Samana to be integrated into the 24 hour electricial system (investment of $30 million pesos)
· Other steps involve the removal of the town garbage
· Further development will be the Improvement of the present rocky, broken asphalt roads
· According to the president, there will be the construction of a new highway to Las Galeras & another one to Las Terrenas
In conclusion, the President stated that he will be visiting Samana every
three months to supervise & investigate what has been done during each
period to clean up the town & reduce the pollution and drug trafficking. The importance of cleaning up and renovating Samana was stressed in regard to tourism and the 200 cruise ships expected to dock in Samana Bay during the
