NEWLY FORMED LA ESPAÑOLA CONGREGATION IN SANTIAGO FLOURISHING SPIRITUALLY!

Brother writes, "A new bookstudy was started in the "campo" in La Torre, April. & now 40-50 are attending." Brother continues, "We urgently need one more servant to open up a second book study.  We need sisters because we cannot handle the many Bible studies we are getting!  We urgently need elders/ministerial servants--for hopefully, forming an isolated group in the near future--with Watchtower Study & Public Talk. The territory is great!"

WHAT OUR NEEDGREATERS ARE DOING:

Many  needgreaters have become quite resourceful in creating work for themselves  in order to be able to serve where the need is great here in the Dominican Republic:

·        One  needgreater, a young sister from Japan, is now exporting coffee to Japan to support herself.

·        Another pioneer sister from Canada cleverly made cheesecake and donuts to sell to a restaurant every morning!

·        Another pioneer sister created a Suzuki Violin School many years ago enabling her to stay and pioneer in the country.

·        Two needgreater sisters, one from Germany, the other from USA, sold Tee-shirts to tourists arriving on cruise ships twice a week during the winter months.

·        Another brother operated an internet service at a large hotel.

·        Others are hostessing Bed/Breakfasts

  • Managing a restaurant

·        Operating their own business via Internet

·       Some brothers have come & served for many years in the country as pioneers, special pioneers & missionaries & in time married & had children, but have continued to stay in the country to serve and help out. For example, an Austrian bro. who special pioneered for many, many years, married & eventually had 3 little boys. The brother created his own business, which he operates from his home, online. He & his wife are home-schooling their children & now that the children are around 5,6, & 7 years old, the brother is arranging their family affairs so that in the future all five of them can be pioneers together!  For many, "once a needgreater, always a needgreater!"

  • Many travel home for 3 months of the year & return to serve  the other 9 months.
  • A number of very young needgreaters are encouraged & helped by very loving & supportive parents.
  • Others have created their own personal businesses in the country to support themselves:  See Below:

The Confederacion Nacional de Unidad Sindical (CNUS) states that the minimum wage [monthly] for large companies is RD$6,400 [$190 US] ; while those in the medium range pay RD$4,600 [$140 US] and RD$3,600 [$109 US] for small companies.

TRICOM CALLS TO U.S. 3-CENTS A MINUTE

As of June 2006, Tricom has lowered the rate of international long distance calls to the United States to only RD$0.95 (3-cents US) per minute when made from its residential lines. This is the same price as a local call, according to a report by Diario Libre.

LOWER FOOD, ELECTRONIC, & AUTO PRICES

With the institution of the DR-CAFTA agreement, processed fish, juices and fruits should go down by as much as 33% in many cases and fine cheeses and appliances will also see healthy price cuts. Baby food, wines, disposable diapers, shaving gear, irons, microwaves and stoves, fridges and freezers are all scheduled to undergo major price reductions. According to the article in today's Listin Diario, tires, car radios, brake parts and other items should also go down. Next year, car prices are expected to fall by 5% and in five years by 20% or more.

DOMINICAN EDUCATION WOEFUL

The country has "one of the worst levels of student retention and progress through the grades." As an example the reports shows that at nine years of age, the average student has been in school for 3.7 years but has accomplished only 2.2 years of school work. At 18 years of age, they have been in school for 11.5 years and only have 8.4 years of schooling. The study also points out that in the cities, twelve years of education will earn 60% more than a lack of schooling. A university degree will earn 50% more than the high school degree. However, these salaries are well below the Latin American average.

 BABIES BORN IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

More than 10% of all babies born in the Dominican Republic are underweight. . The current increase in underweight babies is cause for concern, since underweight babies are less resilient when it comes to infections or other problems. Of all of the neonatal deaths reported, a total of 80% were cases of underweight babies. Most of these are premature babies born to very young mothers or undernourished mothers. In Santo Domingo hospital, 'underweight' is defined as being below five pounds and eight ounces at birth. One of the main causes of underweight babies are poor maternal nutrition.
