HOSTEL

WHAT IS A 'HOSTEL'?
The word “hostel” comes from the 14th Century Middle English, Anglo-French & Medieval Latin word: hospitale meaning “lodgng” or “inn”. Among the many commonly accepted definitions found for a hostel” are:
“A
hostel is a budget-oriented overnight lodging place, with shared facilities,
quite often using
sofa-beds, mattresses, or day beds at even more economical rates. Generally,
they do not provide Kitchen or cooking facilities.”
"Persons seeking hostel accommodations are generally on a tight budget and would like to self-cater as much as possible to save money, so they are therefore, quite content to be provided with just a clean simple basic place to sleep."
What is the difference between a hostel and a Bed & Breakfast?
Two major differences between a hostel and a bed & breakfast are:
A hostel provides less amenities - only linens and towels; no frills, and
are much more budget-oriented since their rates are considerably lower.
Some hostels offer the "frills" of Cable TV and/or air conditioning at
additional rates. Unlike hotels and bed and breakfasts, hostels do not
provide breakfast or any other meals.
In the Dominican Republic a hostel, such as Tropical Island Hostel, may only
have water and electricity at the times these are provided by the town in
which they are located, whereas hotels and bed & breakfasts are equipped
with water tanks and battery-powered lights.
ABOUT SAMANA ISLAND HOSTEL
Tropical Island Hostel
has been created in the form of a tiny studio-like apartment with a
very small area providing simple cooking facilities with refrigerator,
stove, and
basic kitchen utensils.
Comfortable accommodations -
one double bed and one single bed (bunk beds) - are
provided for a maximum of three persons.
Since hostel is small and has only one bedroom, the facility is shared only with persons accompanying brothers reserving the hostel. In other words, [unlike European hostels] no other hostel guests are accommodated during that time.

The hostel is located only two blocks from the Great Bay where the little town of Samana is situated. There on the "Malecon" or main street along the sea, boats can be boarded to the beautiful Barcardi Island or Cayo Levantado as well as "gua-guas" and "conchos can be boarded for other beautiful beaches.

The hostel is also located within only a few blocks of reasonably priced restaurants, ice cream parlors, and Internet cafes as well as Samana's "Tropical Flea Market along the sea two or three times a week. Shown below are brothers & sisters (some of whom are pioneers), with their crafts on Flea Market days:
Samana Hostel is located within a 15 minute walk or 5-minute "concho" ride of beautiful CAYACOA BEACH:
The Hostel is about a 20-minute ride by "concho" to picturesque
ANADEL BEACH
& Cayeno Beach Club Restaurant.:

A meeting for field service is held twice a week next door to the Hostel; many brothers and sisters (a good number being pioneers) live within one to three blocks away. The Kingdom Hall is about a 15-miniute walk from the Hostel.
Electricity and water at the hostel are dependent upon the town of Samana. This can vary from electricity cuts several times a day to having electricity 24/7. Water is turned on and off by the town several times a day. In the shower, a large 10-gallon tank is provided for saving water for such times.
Linens and towels are provided for all hostel guests.
