The Haitian solenodon, apparently endemic to the Island of  Hispaņola (Dominican Republic & Haiti),  is an insectivore, weighing about 2 lbs. Solenodons inhabit forests and brushy or rocky areas, and obtain insects & spiders found in soil obtaining these by rooting in the ground with their snouts and by tearing into rotten logs and trees with their foreclaws.
